Boras today is a modern, clean town of 62,000. Very little remains of the town as it was when my ancestors were around. Boras has burned to the ground four times in the past two centuries.
We walked the downtown area and searched for genealogical information at the library, the church, and to some extent at the town museum. All we accomplished was to unearth a web site and email address that might lead to more information.
The one building in Boras that sits where it did when August and Christine were here is the Caroli Church, built in the 1300's.
It's possible that this Lutheran church could have been the place they were baptized
Several original structures that survived the fires have been moved to this site. One is a short, sod-roofed house that no doubt is a lot like the ones my great grandparents lived in, in the early 1800's before they emigrated.
One thing we accomplished in Boras -- we finally found an authentic meal featuring local cuisine - at the zoo.
We had panbiff med lok, with potatoes and plenty of lingenberries.
In the late afternoon we drove south to our B&B in Harslov, a little north of the large city of Malmo. The B&B is run by a couple of enthusiastic guys who love to talk politics and world affairs. No authentic Swedish tonight -- they made us paella and a banana split.
Tomorrow we'll take it easy -- maybe hike a little in the nearby national park.
