July 14 Edam & Amsterdam

This morning's first view from the window was a little startling. Our neighbors the shipwrights had maneuvered a very large antique sailboat to within a few feet of our room.
Later I took a short walk to the drawbridge and took a photo of our room. It's right on the corner, sticking out into the canal.
Since it was supposed to rain today (it didn't), we decided to go back into Amsterdam in case we needed indoor activities. Once in the city and on the tram, I spotted an interesting attraction.
Simultaneously, Kate spotted one.
Culture won out.
Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum has the largest collection of Van Gogh works in the world. But alas, they don't have "Starry Night." Photos were forbidden, but I sneaked in a couple of bad ones with my iPhone before I got busted.
After our museum tour, we caught the tram and went looking for the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam. While enroute, it occurred to me that I might master the Dutch language if I just thought of it as a form of baby talk.
Anyway, the Jordaan neighborhood is Amsterdam's "old town," full of well preserved seventeenth century buildings. Like everything else hereabouts, it oozes charm.
The narrow streets are dotted with artists' studio/galleries, bike shops, cafes, and the occasional funky coffee house reeking of weed.
During our neighborhood wanderings, we found an English book shop where we had coffee and a cookie, and a good conversation with the owner, who comes from Capetown -- which she says is just like California.
We had a good (cheap) pizza dinner in Jordaan.
On our way back to the central bus station, we got a good look at its bicycle parking garage -- three stories, about 100 yards long, and jammed full. Think you could find your bike there?
Some random scenes around Amsterdam's Central Station:
A quick, 20 minute bus ride back to Edam. Then trying to finish "The Diary of Anne Frank" before we visit the museum.
