July 9 Landskrona

Short day today. Our hosts led us to their secret parking spot in Lanskrona, the local town on the North Sea - looking out toward Denmark.
We took a look at the Citadel, built in the 1500's by the Danish King as a defense against the Swedes. For a thousand years or so, the Swedes and the Danes seem to have been at war. During most of that time, what is now Sweden was then part of Denmark, or vice-versa. Very confusing.

Housed in the Citadel was a shop with fine Swedish fabrics, more interesting to some of us than to others.

We walked a little in the town, which is quite picturesque and has several examples of ancient building featuring "half timber" construction.

Stopped in at the City Cross supermarkt (spelling intentional), where we found Uncle Ben's Fullkornsris and a twenty foot long shelf full of different varieties of Wasa crackers.

Later this afternoon we crashed. Kate has the start of a cold, and I just wanted the world's longest nap. At about 8:00 we had a terrific fish dinner here at the B&B. We are the only guests, so we get fringe benefits: Kim washed, dried, and folded all our dirty laundry for us, and Goern spent two hours with us during dinner, telling us stories of his youth in Sweden, describing the complexities of international relations in the area, etc. We have really enjoyed our stay here -- it's inexpensive and we've had a great time getting to know our hosts. Possibly they'll visit us in Palo Alto.

New bulletin: Yesterday our B&B was visited by Swedish TV Channel 3, and they're going to do a feature on our B&B and restaurant. Way to go, boys!

Tomorrow we pack up and head back for an overnight stay in Hamburg with our in-laws. Then on to the Netherlands to hunt for Kate's relatives.
